My solution - works better than purely portable storage for me - was to get network attached storage devices and use those. I like Synology filled with Seagate drives. When opening Windows Explorer, the storage drives do not appear. However, if the USB HD is connected before the system is powered up, the drive can be seen in windows Explorer after booting up. I have seen similar problems discussed here in the forums and I have tried several of the suggestions including uninstalling the drivers, and a hotpatch for an Nvidia chipset even though I have an Intel chipset on the motherboard.
The system is otherwise stable — all programs run fine, all SATA discs are recognized and accessible, USB devices mouse, keyboard, and printer all function normally. Eventually, I stumbled on the novel idea of unplugging the PC entirely from the wall plug. I then plugged the system back into the wall plug, the MOBO seemed to re-set, windows searched for and found a driver this took several minutes and all works as designed.
